Tapping In With the Afronaut. 2023
DATE: 2023
MEDIUM: Etched Aluminum composite material with polycarbonate and wood.
DIMENSIONS: 1.7m (5.6ft’) by 0.6m (2/ 25in) by 0.6m(2.1ft/26in) deep
LOCATION: Temporary Installation - Downsview Park
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
“Tapping In With The Afronaut” is a 3D digital sculpture that was lasered cut, hand carved and etched, and assembled together specifically “imagineered” with the energetic and fun-loving family and young-atheart
visitors in mind.
The figure of the Afronaut - who is a reoccurring time and space travelling character in the artist’s
Afrofuturism-themed body of work, explores the idea of being able to see into the future or have a vision beyond your present position. The Afronaut serves as a reminder of the importance of being creative, which is all necessary when playing golf, as one must be able to creatively imagine a future where when they strike the ball it will go either directly into the hole or close to it. The Afronaut stands on a
teleportation beam pad, awaiting to see each golfer win before returning to the future. From the side, you
can see the Afronaut is leaning forward with excitement towards the golfer and gazes and smiles with confidence as each golfer taps into their own creative outer space.
